This is an interview with Destini Coop. She is a marketing consultant with over 25 years of experience in marketing and online education. She is also the host of the Course Makers MBA podcast, which has benefited over 4,700 online entrepreneurs.
In this interview, they will discuss the five simple steps to create your revenue-generating online course.
Destini helps entrepreneurs now in scaling their digital product revenue like an online course or a membership. So, they can reduce their reliance on services or freelance work. She is very enthusiastic about passive income.
One of the first things she tells people is to make sure they have an audience to sell to, because selling an online course is a little different. When selling services, you might have a discovery call with someone, which is referred to as one-on-one time selling, but with online courses, it’s more like marketing, emailing or posting information on social media. You can start on facebook groups, sell and build up an email list.
That is one of the five steps of building your audience first.
Another motivation to grow your audience is to receive feedback. It’s about knowing who your ideal customer is because there’s someone out there who wants to hire you but can’t afford it. Market research can help you narrow things down. You can send an email to your email list based on the results of your social media survey, asking them about their pain points and issues. That is how she comes up with her membership structure.
So step number two is deciding on what kind of course you create, and do your market research.
She also encouraged people who are just getting started to try out mini course.. You can put a tiny offer and create a subject matter course that goes a little further into a topic. Give them a quick win, and then begin building your email list from there.
Step number three is to create your outline.
In this area many are stuck. She said that people want the basic information and shorter videos which can be as short as five minutes or as long as ten minutes or less. They don’t want big workbooks with a lot of homework in them. So her takeaway from this one is to gather only the essential details and construct an outline. You can use google documents, post it notes, mind mapping software, or whichever method works best for you to outline.
Step four is when you start putting together your course materials.
If you’re creating online course videos, she suggests using Canva to make simple presentations in front of the camera that may be filmed. Zoom is another tool that can be used to record online course presentations wherein you can screen share your Google Slides or PowerPoint presentation. There’s also a loom and plenty of other options.
Furthermore, create supplemental material such as cheat sheets, and workbooks. She uses pdf escape, a free freeware for Windows users that allows you to make your workbooks editable and easy to download for your students to save on their computer rather than printing them out.
Step five is to host your content in a place where students can purchase it.
There are many online course platforms to choose from, such as Podia, Teachable, and Kajabi, since it is simple to post course content. All you have to do is take your video and any supplemental materials and click a button to upload them into your online course platform.
